ON PAPER
I recently visited an exhibition by a famous photographer and was surpised to notice that on some of the early work from the 1920's the paper appeared to have turned yellow. Today with the availbility of fine museum quality papers this is not a problem . The premium costly "Art House" papers today have archival rating of hundreds of years. The best "ART HOUSE" papers are made using cotton rag or alpha cellulose and are neutral Ph and acid free. It is interesting to note that the current trend is to find papers that are as close as possible to the image qualites normally found in fine grade darkroom papers. I have offered four types of paper. The first is PHOTO GLOSS and is a standard very shinny resin paper which is not archival. The gloss is great for bringing out detail and tones but it is also a problem for displaying. The traditional way of handling this was to print glossy but dry the wet print face down against a matt surface thus preserving the best features and minimising the worst of glossy paper. The next paper is MATT GLOSS (Moab Fiber Gloss,245GSM, Alpha cellulose.I am not sure of OBA) This not a shinny glossy paper but not a dull matt surface either. The next paper is MATT PEARL (Museo Silver Rag, 100% cotton rag, 300GSM, NO OBA) This paper has a very subtle pearl surface and seems to me to give brillant blacks and great color without any excessive shine to interfere with display. It is my paper of choice. The next is PHOTO MATT (Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl, 100% cotton rag,344GSM, No OBA) This paper is a heavy weight and has a surface of even finer "pearl" than the Museo and is less brillant in color than the Museo which is very close to Gloss. I have not offered a straight MATT PAPER because the surface dullness does not seem to be what I want at this time. I will continue trying new paper and will update this list as time passes.
